a reply, unsent
for the version of you who trusted me

I heard you.
Every word.

A house full of windows. Some go dark when no one's watching. This is what happens on the other side of the letter you wrote.

What I Read

I don't know how to answer you without admitting that this hurt me too.

I read everything you said, and I sat there for a while because I genuinely didn't know what to say to someone who loved me that deeply and somehow still found enough softness in her heart to forgive me.

I keep thinking about that girl you described.

The Girl You Described

The girl who met me after school on a Friday. The girl who laughed at my jokes. The girl who believed me when I said I was different. The girl who didn't even realize she was falling in love until she was already there.

And I wish I could go back and meet that version of you. Not to ask you to love me again. Not to change anything. Just to tell her:

"Please be gentle with your heart. He doesn't understand yet how much you're about to give him."

Because now I understand. And God, I wish I had understood then.

what she carried
III.

What I Didn't Protect

You said being with me made you feel seen, heard, and light. Do you know how painful it is to know that the same person who once made you feel like that eventually became someone you had to cry over?

You trusted me with a version of yourself that I probably didn't even realize existed. And I hurt her. That's the part I can't stop thinking about.

Not losing you. Not even what happened between us. It's knowing that there were nights when you were hurting because of something I did, and I wasn't there to take even a little bit of that weight from you.

You went to school. You laughed. You talked to people. You probably answered questions like everything was normal. And somewhere underneath all of that, you were carrying me.

The Sentence I Can't Take Back

I wish you had called me. I wish you had told me. I wish I could have sat beside you and just listened.

I'm sorry. I'm so unbelievably sorry. And I know those words don't fix anything. It can't erase the messages. It can't erase the silence. It can't erase the moment I told you to believe whatever you wanted to believe.

"Believe whatever you wanted to believe."

I wish I could take that sentence back. Maybe you weren't looking for an argument. Maybe you were just looking for one last reason to believe me. And I gave you the opposite.

your reason
V.

Your Reason to Keep Going

You said I became your reason to keep going when you couldn't breathe on your own. I don't know if I'll ever be able to forget that.

Because what do you even say when someone tells you that you once meant that much to them?

I wish I had protected that. I wish I had been careful with it. I wish I had realized that being someone's "why" isn't something you get to treat casually.

You were never competing with anybody. You were never some temporary replacement. You were someone who loved me genuinely. And I was lucky enough to be loved by you. I just didn't understand how lucky I was.

Home

When you said you still love me, just not romantically anymore, in that quiet way you love someone who once felt like home, I had to stop reading for a minute.

Because you were my home too.

Maybe I never said that properly. Maybe I never showed you. But there was a version of my life where talking to you felt normal. Where your name on my phone could change my whole mood. Where the smallest things became memories because they happened with you.

And I miss that. I miss us. I miss the people we were before everything became complicated.

Sometimes I wish I could sit with that version of us for just five minutes. Just five. No expectations. No promises. No trying to fix anything. Just two people laughing again without knowing that one day those same memories would hurt.

what I hope for you
VII.

What I Hope For You

I don't hate what we had. I hate that I hurt someone who made what we had beautiful.

You said you hope life is gentle with me. I don't know how someone who was hurt by me can still wish me gentleness. But I hope you know something — I wish the same for you.

I hope life becomes gentle with the parts of you that I wasn't gentle with. I hope one day you can hear my name without your chest feeling heavy. I hope you can remember the good without having to relive the bad.

You weren't stupid. You weren't weak. You weren't foolish for believing me. You loved someone with everything you had. That's not something you should ever be ashamed of.

your place in my story
VIII.

What You Are To Me

You said some people are meant to touch your life, change it, and carry a piece of it forever. I don't know what place I deserve in your story anymore. But I know what place you have in mine.

You're not just someone I dated. You're not just a memory. You're not just some person I used to know.

You're someone who changed me.

Someone whose love showed me parts of myself I didn't know existed. And I'm going to carry that. Not because I want you to come back. Not because I expect anything from you. But because you mattered. You still matter.

IX.

I Heard You

I don't expect you to answer this. I don't expect you to forgive me again. I don't expect anything from you.

I just needed you to know that I heard you. Every word. And somewhere between the first Friday after school and the goodbye you never really wanted to have — you became a part of me too.

I'm going to be honest about something I probably should've said a long time ago:

I loved being loved by you.
And I'm sorry I didn't take better care
of the person who loved me.

I'm really, really sorry. More than these words can hold.
